Community Peacemaking Framework
Understanding Peacemaking Overview
Community peacemaking begins with an understanding that conflict does not occur between isolated individuals. It sits within relationships, families, community life, culture, history and place.
When conflict is left unresolved, its effects can spread. Other family members may become involved. Children and young people may be affected. Earlier experiences of hurt may return. A disagreement between two people can gradually become a wider community concern.
Community peacemaking creates a locally grounded way for people to respond before conflict causes further harm. It helps people come together, understand what has happened and determine what may be needed to restore peace.
There is no single model that will be right for every community. Peacemaking must reflect the people, relationships, culture, authority and circumstances of the place in which it is practised.
